Tumbang-Preso

There is a universality to the games that children around the world play. In the west, many grow up playing kick the can. In the Philippines, the word tumba means “to fall” and preso means “prisoner.”

To play tumbang-preso, an empty can serves as the center of the game. Tsinelas or flip-flops are used to hit the can. Five to ten children play with one chosen to be taya “it.”

The object of the game is to make the can fall to its side and retrieve the thrown flip-flop before the “it” stands the can back up.
